The following entries typically work in two phases. I have tried to start each entry with a relatively brief, straightforward, and hopefully jargon-free definition that may help you understand some of the foundational terms used in the main Chapters. That baseline definition is marked as the “First Take.” In some instances, to avoid repeating discussion in my Chapters, I have simply indicated where the term or phrase is discussed in the main text. Where suitable, I have also appended some recommended readings for further thought.

In addition, in the second phase usually labelled “Deeper,” I’ve appended additional reflections on the complications or even the contradictions around a given analytical term. In a field that, in my view, is still developing, it helps to see some of the openings for further work or conversation.
